Sports Mark DeRosa’s wrist strikes again with weird batter’s box injury 19 May 2011, 3:34 pm If there were ever any doubts over the severity of Mark DeRosa's ongoing wrist problems, they were totally erased after his freak injury on Wednesday night. The San Francisco Giants' utility man left the game in the fourth inning of a 8-5 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers with what they were calling a strained left wrist. Manager Bruce Bochy later said it "looks like he's going to be out for awhile." What was particularly noteworthy about the injury was that it seemed to happen out of nowhere. DeRosa was standing in the batter's box, awaiting a pitch from Clayton Kershaw when he dropped the bat in pain. Television announcers initially thought the pitch had hit him, but Kershaw's throw actually bounced in the dirt and came nowhere near DeRosa. Watch the unusual injury here There was also no swing and no contact with any other player, though a confused DeRosa later told a teammate he thought catcher Rod Barajas had grabbed his bat. (You know it's an unusual injury when even the injured player can't come up with a plausible explanation for it.) Some Giants fans may shrug their shoulders over the loss of a 36-year-old infielder who was batting .162/.225/.189 over 18 games this season, but the truth is that his faulty left wrist — which could now spell the end of his career — can take a lot of the blame. DeRosa has already had two surgeries on the wrist (the first one was reportedly botched) and only played 26 games for the Giants in 2010. Now it looks like he'll again miss significant time in 2011, making it a remote likelihood that the Giants will get anything past quality veteran leadership for the two-year, $12 million contract they gave DeRosa before the start of the 2010 season.
