The Juice: Sizzling Arizona beats Rockies for 9th win in 10 games
27 May 2011, 10:29 am

Nine innings, nine items to get you going (unless there are only eight games). Ladies and gentleman of the Stew, take a sip of morning Juice.

1. By the time they get to first place: Having won nine of 10, the Arizona Diamondbacks are somehow the hottest team in baseball, only 1 1/2 games out of first place in the NL West. Miguel Montero (glance to your right) hit a home run and drove in three, and Micah Owings pitched effectively enough over five innings in a 6-3 victory at Colorado  on Thursday. The loss put the Rockies under .500. It's nice to have Owings back; If for no other reason to check the box score to see how he hit (0 for 2 — dangit).

2. Take this game, please: From the play-by-play, the ninth inning sounded pretty ugly for the Blue Jays, who appeared to force victory upon the White Sox. Chicago took advantage, winning 3-1 after Juan Pierre drove in the go-ahead run with an infield single that also featured a run-scoring error. Oh, this is a funny replay of the big moment.

3. California dreamin': Oakland Athletics left-hander Brett Anderson gave the Angels almost nothing for eight innings in a 4-3 victory; Los Angeles only made it close on a three-run homer by Mark Trumbo in the bottom of the ninth. The big offensive day for Orange County came courtesy of Andy LaRoche, who drove in three runs.

4. Tom Brady bunch: The Boston Patriots Red Sox got another four-hit game by Carl Crawford, who also ran the Wildcat offense at quarterback in a 14-1 thumping of the Tigers that was shortened to eight innings. That's two 14-run outbursts in the past two games for Boston.

5. Your huckleberry, Cliff Lee:

In the wake of the bullpen-depleting 19-inning game the night before, Lee got 24 outs against the Reds, who also had trouble defending him at the plate. He went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs in a 10-4 victory against the Reds. Check out where his double landed — deep center field, in his Brazilian rainforest, out of range from outfielder Drew Stubbs.

Lee also ran the bases like a ninja. He also acted as designated driver for every fan who requested his services. No he didn't. But he would have, if asked.

6. Wait five minutes: Carlos Zambrano had himself a day, going 3 for 3 at the plate and pitching six innings strong to lead the Cubs past the Mets 9-3. But manager Mike Quade can't stop talking about the lousy Chicago weather.

"Despite weather, it ended up being a lot of fun," [he] said.

Uh huh. Carlos Peña hit his sixth homer since May 3.

"As the conditions improve and the weather warms up, there'll be more of those ball leaving the ballpark," said Quade.

Yes, good weather will make the Cubs go 20-7 in July.

7. Fish hooks: Florida's Anibal Sanchez has the prettiest first name in the majors, and he also is capable of pitching some of the prettiest games. This was a five hitter, outdueling Ryan Vogelsong (there he is AGAIN) in a 1-0 victory against the Giants. It was a tough day for S.F., obviously, after learning about Buster Posey's injury. Hey, Eli Whiteside, this is your team now. (Not really.)

8. Magical: The Baltimore Orioles got to .500? When did that happen? After they beat the Royals 6-5 in 12 innings on Vladimir Guerrero's single, silly.
