1. Hooray for Jay: Anyone else call him "Jay the Bruce" because of "Braveheart"? Just me, eh? Anyway, he came through with a three-run, bases-clearing double to break a tie in the ninth and lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-3 victory at Philly. The Reds can now exhale after losing six straight, which was troubling given the Cardinals rise.
2. AlbAlb winswins: Now that Al Alburquerque has earned a major league victory, we can't say he's got a Triple-A name anymore. Alex Avila came through again for the Detroit Tigers, hitting his second home run of the game to give them a lead in the eighth inning, and they hung on to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-6.
3. Pop open a Coors, pour one out for Jorge: Carlos Gonzalez hit a pair of homers and the Colorado Rockies took apart the D-backs 12-4 to salvage a doubleheader split, but they're also scrambling after losing left-hander Jorge De La Rosa to a season-ending elbow injury. He most likely needs Tommy John ligament replacement surgery. Behind Joe Saunders, Arizona won 5-2 in Game 1.
4. Tell Charlie you're sorry, offense: Brooks Conrad and Martin Prado each drove in a run, which is more than anyone on the Pittsburgh Pirates could say. Charlie Morton did his best, but Jair Jurrjens was better, scattering six hits into the eighth inning, and the Atlanta Braves edged the Pirates 2-0.
5. Redbirds soaring: Given their injuries and other factors, it's remarkable the St. Louis Cardinals are 30-20 after a 3-2 victory in 11 innings against the Padres. Daniel Descalso, who seems to save his productive moments for late in ballgames, had the go-ahead hit.
6. Mother nature says hello: Three home runs by Carlos Quentin helped the Chicago White Sox persevere through a weather delay of three hours and beat the Texas Rangers 8-6. The Rangers Ballpark was evacuated in the fourth inning, with fans streaming through dugouts and into underground shelters amid tornado warnings for the Arlington, Texas area. The worst the park got was softball-size hail, but it was still scary stuff.
7. Punch Adam's ribs: Adam Jones hit a game-ending homer — as bad things happened to Royals closer Joakim Soria again — in the Baltimore Orioles a stunning 5-3 victory. Of the celebration at home plate, he said:
"It felt good getting punched in the stomach and ribs," Jones said.
8. Damn Yankees rally, eh?: Ahead by four runs through seven innings, the Blue Jays seemed to have this one wrapped up, but Mark Teixeira capped a comeback with a run-scoring infield single in the bottom of the ninth for a 5-4 victory. The other man of the moment was CC Sabathia, who retired the final 16 men he faced to keep the Yanks close.
9. Boston — mark it: Jason Varitek made himself of use with a two-run homer in the seventh and the Boston Red Sox improved to 15-7 in May with a 4-2 victory against the Cleveland Indians. It's a good thing for them that right-hander Josh Beckett has gotten his act together individually. He lowered his ERA to 1.69.
