David Ortiz’s bat flip creates stir in Red Sox-Yanks opener

A true Red Sox-Yankees tiff or just an attempt by the tabloids to create a controversy?

That's the question to ask this Wednesday morning after Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz dramatically flicked his bat away after homering off a pitch from New York's Hector Noesi in a 6-4 victory Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. The two-run blast came one pitch after Noesi threw inside on Ortiz in a presumed retaliation attempt for Jon Lester hitting Mark Teixeira (and injuring him) earlier in the game.

Ortiz, however, claimed the buzzing had nothing to do with the bat flip and small pirouette. "That's Papi style. You've seen that before," he said, channeling the third-person. "I just went deep. You want more emotion than that?"

Yankees fans didn't appreciate the move, booing Ortiz as he rounded the bases (and later chiding him via the blogs, as Subway Squawker Lisa Swan did). The highlight then got an added boost when Yankees manager Joe Girardi expressed his displeasure with Ortiz's routine.

From MLB.com:

"I didn't really care for it," Girardi said. "I don't know if he was upset that he missed some pitches earlier. I've got a young kid [in Hector Noesi] on the mound. I didn't know if he was upset that he came in hard on him. Of course, when it happens to you, you're going to defend your guy. If it's our guy, I'm going to say there was nothing intentional about it."

But if the rest of the Yankees were equally ticked, it hasn't been reported. Catcher Russell Martin is the only other pinstriper quoted by the Daily News or the NY Post and he doesn't seem to have much of an issue with it:

"He took his time coming out of the box," Martin said. "You never want it to happen to you, but I guess it's up to us to do it back right to him ... It's part of the game. Some guys do it, some guys don't. ... I've seen him do it before. I like it better when he's doing it against other teams."

That, apparently, is enough for NYDN columnist John Harper to hope that there's some chance for retaliation over the series' final two games on Wednesday and Thursday. If you ask me, though, the situation seems over and done with.

What do you think — Do the Yanks have a beef?
