1. Riding their brooms back to Mass.: Well, at least the New York Yankees can take solace in Boston's David Ortiz finally getting hit with a pitch and Derek Jeter getting one hit closer to 3,000. Everything else went the Red Sox's way — particularly in a seven-run seventh inning — of an 8-3 victory at Yankee Stadium that was delayed nearly 3 1/2 hours at the start because of poor weather. If the Red Sox sweeping the Yanks in the Bronx seems familiar, that's because it's the second time it happened this month. More lousy news for New York: Joba Chamberlain has a torn ligament in his elbow.
2. Polly want a do-over: Speaking creating of fan angst, the Cubs didn't roll over and die when the Phillies had them down in the ninth. Geovany Soto hit a tying home run against Ryan Madson (for his first blown save) and then Tyler Colvin hit a ... well, it might have been a home run, but for a Phillies fan apparently reaching over a railing and causing much confusion. And then the fan threw the ball back. Dope. After checking the replay at Charlie Manuel's request, umps overturned the homer and the Cubs had to wait until the 11th for a 4-3 victory, which turned on a Placido Polanco error.
3. Owings at-bat report: Chris Young hit a home run and Micah Owings pitched 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief in Arizona's 2-0 victory at Pittsburgh, but ... let's check the box score for something ... Yes! Owings got a hit and scored a run. Who needs a DH?
4. Adrian Gonzalez 3000: Rookie slugger Anthony Rizzo had a nice little debut for the San Diego Padres: A Petco Park triple, two walks, a run scored and about 50 pitches seen in the Padres 7-3 victory against Washington. Rizzo was part of the payment for Gonzalez, who went to the Red Sox in a trade.
5. It's like we thought: Detroit's Justin Verlander appeared pretty dominant in a 4-1 victory against the Mariners. Seattle's Brendan Ryan can confirm:
"It isn't fun facing him; it is not fun at all," Ryan said. "He's throwing 98, he's got closer stuff and he's got extra pitches on top of that. He throws them all where he wants them, and he throws them on any count. It's tough."
6. Look out, world?: The Minnesota Twins no longer have the worst record in the majors after Alexi Casilla's RBI single in the ninth lifted them to a 5-4 victory against the Texas Rangers.
7. Dinger still needs pants: Wow, a Colorado Rockies rally. When's the last time you saw one of those? The Rox put up five runs in the seventh and toppled the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-7 at Coors. Matt Kemp missed a cycle by a single, his last chance coming (and going) in the ninth when Huston Street struck him out as the potential tying run.
8. Sorry hitting: Johnny Cueto struck out eight in a 3-0 victory at San Francisco. The Giants have been limited to one run or fewer 15 times in 63 games, and it always seems like Madison Bumgarner is pitching when it happens. "I don't expect them to apologize," MadBum says. He's a swell guy, but they ought to score some runs for him.
9. Tanks, Fish: Jair Jurrjens' ERA stands at 1.75 after throwing seven effective innings against the Marlins in a 3-2 victory. It's Atlanta's first three-game sweep in Miami since 1995.
