The Juice: Gonzalez says ‘Aloha’ to Mr. Hand with home run
Jun 8th 2011, 12:02

Nine innings, nine items to get you going. Ladies and gentleman of the Stew, take a sip of morning Juice.

1. Doesn't that make it our time?: Florida Marlins left-hander Brad Hand deserved better in his major league debut. But, like a total Spicoli, Alex Gonzalez hit a solo home run leading off the fourth for the only run of a 1-0 Atlanta Braves victory Tuesday night. The Braves got only two hits all night, but to Tommy Hanson and the victors go the pizza, dudes. A great performance — so wasted!

But, check this out, referring to the AP's story:

Hand became only the second starter since 1946 to throw at least six innings, allow one hit or less and lose in his major league debut, according to Stats LLC. The other was Mike Thompson of the Washington Senators. He gave up one hit in seven innings but lost to Baltimore on May 19, 1971.

Gnarly!

2. These teams don't like each other: Although they're sure to meet 1,000 more times in 2011, the Boston Red Sox have a clear early edge against the New York Yankees. They won for the sixth time in seven meetings 6-4, behind six suitable innings from Jon Lester and a bat flippin' home run by David Ortiz. Captain Derek Jeter, at DH, had two hits to move within 12 of 3,000.

3. Rubby's racin': Rubby (pronounced "rooby") De La Rosa and the Los Angeles Dodgers bullpen shut down Roy Oswalt and the Phillies 6-2. Rubby gets Oswalt every time, history shows.

4. Rowdy Redbirds: St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jake Westbrook hit a three-run double, and Albert Pujols hit a home run for the fourth consecutive game in a 7-4 victory at Houston. Ha! Pitchers hitting.

5. Give us Barabbas! All of the Moneyball haters must be loving how the Oakland Athletics are skidding along right now. They were shut out 4-0 by Chris Jakubauskas (who came in with a 6.39 ERA) and three Baltimore Orioles relief pitchers.

6. Crockett, Tubbs, Castillo: On the strength of a Jose Reyes two-run triple, the Mets beat the Brewers 2-1 at Miller Park. All of the names of the pitchers with decisions in this game — Capuano (winner), Estrada (loser) and Rodriguez (saver) — sound like cops from Miami Vice.

Hey, check out the catch that Carlos Gomez  (pictured) made.

7. They're all big leaguers: Give some credit to Carlos Carrasco and Chris Perez for shutting down the Minnesota Twins 1-0, but the lineup facing the Cleveland Indians wouldn't strike much fear into a Triple-A opponent. "Mitchell Friedman? Who are these guys?"

8. Made a mess in Texas: The surging Detroit Tigers dropped 20 hits on the Texas Rangers in an 8-1 thumping deep in the heart. The Motor Citians have 38 knocks in two games at Rangers Ballpark.

9. Zimmerman(n)ia!: One of these days, it should be an interesting question to answer: Who is the Nationas' ace: Jordan Zimmermann or Stephen Strasburg? Zimm kept the San Francisco Giants in check and also drove in the tie-breaking run with a safety squeeze in a 2-1 victory. Ha! Pitchers batting.
