The Juice: Huff goes deep three times in Giants win
Jun 3rd 2011, 10:11

Nine innings, nine items to get you going. Ladies and gentleman of the Stew, take a sip of morning Juice.

1. Lambs to the slaughter: In order to set up his rotation for an upcoming series against the Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa apparently had no better choice than to use two pitchers making their major league debuts, including a starter on three days of rest. Predictably, the San Francisco Giants hammered Lance Lynn and Maikel Cleto in a 12-7 victory that featured three, count 'em, home runs by Aubrey Huff.

"There wasn't anything in Lynn's stuff to say he was pitching on short rest," La Russa said. "I mean, the situation was difficult. It would be difficult for anybody who would have pitched in the big leagues."

Lynn said he wasn't tired, just made some poor pitches starting with Jonathan Sanchez's leadoff double.

Hopefully, this won't prevent Cards fans from forming a support group for Maikel called the Cletomaniacs.

2. ... and puff: Huff came in batting .219/.279/.348, but unleashed heck on the Cards, collecting a career-best six RBIs. Colby Rasmus matched that total for the Cards, who dropped three of four to the world champs. At least the Cards forced Guillermo Mota (pictured above) to think in existential terms about his unsuccessful relief appearance.

3. Managers at play: To summarize the game in another way, check out this brilliant short film by @DavidTiao.

4. Stark, raving mad: New York Mets players obviously took heed from the rantings of manager Terry Collins, coming back from seven runs down to beat the Pirates 9-8.

A three-run homer by Carlos Beltran in the third inning started the road back, though the Bucs also dilly dallied around and ... well, they basically handed the game over. They're stuck on 17 road victories.

Hey, don't get hurt doing the high-five, Jose Reyes and Jose Pagan (on the right).

5. Pugilists: Swarzak beat O'Sullivan in a battle of 19th-century-sounding heavyweight boxers, also meaning the Minnesota Twins beat the Royals 8-2.

6. Endy Chavez?: Endy Chavez — Endy Chavez! — had four hits to lead the Texas Rangers to a 7-4 victory at Cleveland. Chavez is batting .415 since coming up from the minors and missing two seasons with an injured knee. Are the Indians coming back to Mother Earth? They've dropped three straight at home after starting 19-4 at Progressive Field.

7. Shields down, captain: Only Felix Hernandez showed up to the pitchers duel against James Shields, and the Seattle Mariners moved two games over .500 after an 8-2 thumping of the Tampa Bay Rays. Wily slugger Carlos Peguero, hitting .169 coming in, somehow hit two of Seattle's four home runs against Shields.

8. Mann among boys: Washington's Jordan Zimmermann has been terrific for six straight starts and dominated the Diamondbacks in a 6-1 victory. Six hits, a walk and four strikeouts.

9. Houston beats San Diego: I wish this were an AFC football game from the late 1970s. Instead, it's a 7-4 Astros victory behind Bud Norris.
