You’re dismissed: Rangers, Marlins fire respective hitting coaches
Jun 9th 2011, 16:12

Wednesday was a busy day for in-season coaching firings with two different teams deciding to part company with their hitting coaches.

The Texas Rangers made the first move, firing Thad Bosley (right) just over two months into his first season instructing their potent lineup. Bosley took the place of Clint Hurdle when he left to take the Pittsburgh Pirates managerial opening back in November.

The Rangers entered play on Wednesday fourth in the league in runs scored, and second in both batting average and home runs. Those numbers despite the lengthy absences of Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz made Bosley's dismissal a head-scratcher initially. But as we learned in comments from Hamilton later on, it was chemistry in the clubhouse, not performance, that led to the change.

From the Fort-Worth Star Telegram:

"Thad was a good guy," Hamilton said. "He had a good heart. He just didn't fit with us. He's professional the way he approaches the game and the way he approaches teaching the game. It just didn't mesh with our clubhouse."

"A lot of it was communication," Hamilton said. "There was not a lot there. You'd like to have somebody that knows when to back off, when to approach, gets what they want to get across to you but find out your personality and how to get it across to you. Those things just didn't happen the way it needed to."

Hopefully former Ranger Scott Coolbaugh has been brushing up on his communication skills. He'll take over the job for the rest of the season.

The circumstances were quite a bit different in Miami, where the Florida Marlins canned John Mallee immediately after dropping their seventh straight game, a 3-2 extra inning loss to the Atlanta Braves.

Recent performance — three runs per game during their losing streak — clearly played a role in this decision, but unlike Bosley in Texas, Mallee was a very popular figure in the Marlins clubhouse. Enough so that players like Logan Morrison spoke out disapprovingly of the move.

From The Palm Beach Post:

"I don't think it's right. I don't think it's just," outfielder Logan Morrison said. "He's had me prepared more than anybody.

"It's definitely not his fault. We let him down. Everybody has their finger on the panic button. It's hard to relax and play baseball."

Mallee took over at hitting coach when Fredi Gonzalez and part of his staff were fired last June. Prior to that he had worked with Morrison and other young Marlins like Chris Coghland, who called Mallee the "best coach he's ever had", as they worked their way through Florida's minor league system.

ESPN studio analyst Eduardo Perez, son of Marlins special assistant and Hall of Famer Tony Perez, will take Mallee's place. I'm sure he'll be greeted and treated professionaly upon his arrivial, but you get the feeling he'll have some work to do to earn the respect of the players who were fond of Mallee.

Two different firings. Two different set of circumstances. Two completely different reactions from within. It will be interesting to see if either change has the desired impact, a negative impact, or maybe no impact at all on either club as we move forward.
